St Patrick's Cathedral, near Empress Market in Saddar, is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Karachi. The first church in Sindh, a small Carmelite mission chapel, was built on this ground in 1845; the city's growing Catholic community raised the present Gothic cathedral, begun in 1878 and consecrated on 24 April 1881, with room for 1,500 worshippers. In front of it stands the Monument to Christ the King, built between 1926 and 1931 to mark the Jesuit mission in Sindh. Pakistan Post issued commemorative stamps for its centenary.
