Holy Trinity Cathedral, Karachi
One of Karachi's first major churches, built of buff Gizri stone in 1855; its tall tower once carried beacons for ships in the harbour.
Holy Trinity Cathedral, on Fatima Jinnah Road near Zainab Market, is the seat of the Church of Pakistan's Diocese of Karachi. Established in 1844 and built in 1855 to a design by Captain John Hill of the Bombay Engineers, it was one of the first major churches in the city, Romanesque in plan and built of buff Gizri stone, with a 115-foot nave and a tower that first rose to 150 feet. With no lighthouse nearby, the tower carried beacons to guide ships into Karachi harbour, and in the First World War it served as a signalling station.
