The Walled City, or Old City, is the historic core of Lahore. A city here was fortified by 1040, and it rose to prominence as a Mughal capital, when Lahore Fort and the city walls were rebuilt and monuments such as the Wazir Khan Mosque, Badshahi Mosque and Shahi Hammam were added. Under Sikh rule it was a capital again, gaining the Samadhi of Ranjit Singh and the Gurdwara Janam Asthan Guru Ram Das. Since 2012 the Shahi Guzargah, the royal route from Delhi Gate to Wazir Khan Mosque, has been restored.
