Gadani Beach

Gadani is a long, dark-sand beach on the Balochistan coast 60 km north-west of Karachi, most famous as the site of one of the world's largest ship-breaking yards, a raw, industrial landscape where ocean freighters are dismantled on the shore. Beyond the yards, the beach extends for kilometres of uncrowded coastline backed by Makran hills, with clear Arabian Sea water and dramatic sunsets.

It occupies a different register entirely from Karachi's commercial beaches: remote, working, and photographically extraordinary.

Why go

  • Ship-breaking yards, one of the world's largest
  • Undisturbed long-beach coastline
  • Makran coastal hills backdrop
  • Dramatic evening light on metal hulls and surf
  • Fishermen's settlements and fresh catch

The Ship-Breaking Yard

Gadani's beach is home to the world's third-largest ship-breaking operation, ocean-going tankers and freighters are beached at high tide and cut apart by hand over weeks or months. The scale is extraordinary. Photography is largely unrestricted from the beach. This is industrial heritage at its most visceral.

The Beach Beyond the Yards

To the west of the yards, Gadani's beach opens into kilometres of deserted dark-sand coastline. The Makran hills provide a desert backdrop, and the Arabian Sea is calm and warm from October through March. Fishermen from the Gadani settlement work the beach, fresh fish is often available.

Karachi Day Trip Logistics

Most visitors combine Gadani with the Balochistan Coastal Highway or a Makran itinerary. For a Karachi day trip: depart by 7am, reach Gadani by 9am, explore the yards and beach until midday, return by early afternoon. A driver who knows the route is essential, the road passes through Hub town and is straightforward but unmarked at the beach turn.

Planning tip

When to go, October to March. Summer is dangerously hot. The sea is calmest from November to February.

Getting there, 1.5-2 hour drive from Karachi via the N-25 highway toward Hub. A private car or driver is necessary, no regular public transport.

Allow, Half-day from Karachi, depart early and return before dark. An overnight adds nothing logistically; it's a day trip.
