Gilgit

Gilgit is the capital of Gilgit-Baltistan and the working hub of the north, sitting where the Gilgit and Hunza rivers gather before joining the Indus a little further south. It is not a scenic destination in its own right so much as the region's supply base: airport, hospitals, markets, and the last reliable fuel and phone signal before the Karakoram Highway climbs into Hunza.

Travellers pass through Gilgit at least twice on any northern circuit, and most stop a night to break the journey.

Why go

  • Confluence of the Gilgit and Hunza river valleys
  • Regional capital with the north's main airport
  • Last major town before the KKH climbs to Hunza
  • Bazaar for last-minute supplies and gear

The North's Supply Base

Gilgit's bazaar carries what the mountain valleys beyond it don't: proper pharmacies, ATMs, phone credit, and trekking supplies. Most Karakoram Highway itineraries build in a night here, both on the way up and on the way back, to rest after the long drive from Islamabad and stock up before Hunza's smaller shops.

Plan It with GreenPak

Gilgit works best as a waypoint rather than a headline stop, use Plan a trip to fold an overnight here into a fuller Hunza-Attabad-Khunjerab itinerary.

Planning tip

When to go, April to October, matching the KKH's open season; Gilgit itself is accessible year-round by air.

Getting there, By road on the Karakoram Highway from Islamabad (a long single day or split over two), or by a short domestic flight from Islamabad, weather permitting.

Allow, A night to rest and restock is usual; most travellers treat it as a stopover rather than a destination.
