Indus Civilisation · Regional Guide
Urban layers older than Rome, Moenjodaro, Makli's marble tombs, and Sufi rhythms where the Indus meets the sea.
Why go
Sindh holds urban layers older than Rome, Indus Valley cities, Makli's marble tombs, and ports where the river meets the sea.
Moenjodaro's grid-planned streets and drainage channels, laid out around 2500 BCE, count among the earliest true cities anywhere, complete with covered sewers and public wells that predate comparable urban engineering elsewhere by centuries. Makli's necropolis outside Thatta spreads across ten square kilometres of carved sandstone tombs raised over four centuries, one of the largest burial grounds anywhere on Earth.
Sufi shrines, ajrak textiles, and delta fishing communities give the province a rhythm distinct from the mountains: Sehwan Sharif holds the shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, one of Pakistan's most revered saints, and its Urs festival draws devotees by the thousand for drumming, dance, and all-night vigil. Ajrak's block-printed indigo and madder patterns, worn as a shawl or turban across Sindh, are made through a weeks-long dyeing process passed down through family workshops concentrated around Hala and Bhit Shah.
Karachi, the gateway city, opens onto Manchar Lake, Pakistan's largest freshwater lake, and the mangrove-lined Indus delta, where the river finally reaches the Arabian Sea. GreenPak does not operate hotels here yet, our team arranges guides, permits, and trusted ground partners for a Moenjodaro-Makli loop timed to the cooler November-February months, ideally paired with a Sehwan shrine visit for a side of the region the ruins alone won't show you.
